FREQUENTLY ASKED

QUESTIONS.

The Training Process

  • Our training process involves an initial evaluation consultation to assess your dog’s needs and determine the best training approach. We then customize a training plan tailored to your dog’s specific requirements. Training sessions are conducted in your home or another suitable location.

  • The training session will primarily take place in your home, where your dog is most comfortable and where many behavior issues occur. Conducting training in the home environment allows us to address specific challenges and provide effective training solutions.

  • The duration of the training process depends on various factors, including your dog’s temperament, previous training and the behaviors or issues being addressed. Basic obedience training typically takes several weeks, while more complex behavior modification may require several months. During the evaluation consultation, we can provide a more accurate estimate based on your dog’s specific needs.

TRAINING METHOD AND THEORY

  • Our dog training method is known as balanced training. It is a scientifically proven approach that utilizes the principles of the four quadrants of dog training psychology. Balanced training combines positive reinforcement with appropriate corrections to achieve desired behaviors and address behavioral challenges effectively.

    1. Positive Reinforcement: Positive reinforcement involves rewarding desired behaviors to encourage their repetition. We use treats, praise, toys, or other rewards to reinforce good behavior and motivate dogs to learn and perform tasks. Positive reinforcement builds a positive association between the behavior and the reward, making it more likely for the behavior to be repeated.

    2. Negative Reinforcement: Negative reinforcement involves the removal of an unpleasant stimulus to reinforce desired behaviors. For example, when a dog responds correctly to a command, we may remove pressure from a leash or stop an aversive sound. Negative reinforcement helps dogs understand that specific actions can lead to the removal of discomfort or unwanted stimuli, encouraging them to repeat the desired behavior.

    3. Positive Punishment: Positive punishment involves applying a mild and appropriate correction to discourage unwanted behaviors. This correction is carefully timed and administered to interrupt and discourage behaviors such as jumping, excessive barking, or aggression. The goal is to teach the dog that these behaviors are undesirable and have negative consequences.

    4. Negative Punishment: Negative punishment involves the temporary removal of positive stimuli as a consequence of unwanted behavior. For instance, if a dog jumps on someone, we might briefly withdraw attention by turning away or stepping back. Negative punishment helps dogs understand that certain behaviors result in the loss of desired attention or rewards, reducing the likelihood of those behaviors occurring again.

By incorporating the four quadrants of dog training psychology, balanced training aims to create a clear communication system between the dog and the owner, promoting obedience, balanced behavior, and a healthy bond. We prioritize the use of positive reinforcement and rewards to motivate and shape desired behaviors while using corrections appropriately and humanely to discourage unwanted behaviors.

Our trainers are experienced and knowledgeable in applying the balanced training method effectively and safely. We emphasize the importance of understanding each dog's unique personality, temperament, and learning style to tailor the training approach accordingly.

It is important to note that while the balanced training method has been proven effective, it is essential to use corrections and punishments responsibly, with proper timing and intensity, and always with the well-being and safety of the dog in mind. Our trainers are committed to using these techniques ethically and ensuring a positive training experience for both dogs and their owners.
